40 people treated for scabies at Jupiter Medical Center

A case of scabies was reported at the Jupiter Medical Center Wednesday, and now the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County is investigating.According to the Jupiter Medical Center, a critical care cancer patient was admitted to the hospital. During the course of treatment, the patient was identified as carrying scabies.The patient, as well as 40 Jupiter Medical Center care providers, were diagnosed and treated. Jupiter Medical Center says they are past the peak of the outbreak. The care providers have completed their treatment and the patient is no longer in their care. Jupiter Medical Center went on to say that the case was isolated to one patient and one unit of the medical center, which has been decontaminated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “human scabies is caused by an infestation of the skin by the human itch mite.” Symptoms of scabies include intense itching and a pimple-like skin rash.
