Like football and volleyball, basketball will also stop in Brazil because of the new coronavirus, called Covid-19. Last Sunday (15), the board of the National Basketball League (LNB), organizer of the NBB (New Basketball Brazil), announced that the competition is suspended indefinitely.

In the last week, the league decided to carry out their matches without the presence of an audience. This protocol lasted until this Sunday, when the last game occurred before the stoppage – the victory by 106 to 103 of São Paulo over Unifacisa, in Campina Grande (PB). Representatives of the 16 clubs participating in the NBB came to the conclusion that the solution of playing games with closed gates is not enough to help contain the coronavirus.

“In a new meeting, it was concluded that the stoppage of the championship would be the best way, prioritizing the health of the athletes, the technical commissions, the referees and the others involved in the matches,” said an excerpt from the note released this Sunday by the league.

This Monday (16), the clubs will meet once again with the league's Board of Directors to decide what the next steps will be. It is already certain, however, that NBB games will not resume until the coronavirus pandemic loses strength.

The match between São Paulo and Unifacisa marked the opening of the 20th week of the competition, the antepenultimate of the qualifying phase. The tricolor team is the leader in points of the NBB, with 46. In use, the first place belongs to Flamengo, with 87.5% (21 wins and 3 losses).
